Indian IT Study Tour

SCIS is organising a ICT industry study tour to India during the February 2009. We will be visiting a number of different ICT based companies (large multinational to small software houses) and IT research and development centres. In the 18 day tour, we will visit cities such as New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune. The tour is limited to 20 enrolled SCIS students. Available places are filling up fast.

This is a fantastic opportunity to experience on of the world's largest IT sectors and the wonders of the Indian subcontinent. Some students may be able to use the tour as partial credit for their IT project units. For more information visit Indian IT Study Tour Info or contact Dr Leisa Armstrong.

Perth GameJam 0808 is on!

Got a nagging game idea you've been longing to prototype and code up but no excuse to do so? Well now is your chance. You are invited to register your interest in GameJam 0808!

What is GameJam?

You will build a game over a few weekends in August. You can work with a team or go solo. There are no rules, other than: downloads should be less than 32MB if possible, and you should try and stick to the theme. The theme will be announced a few days prior, so you can get some plans happening.

At the end of the period, we all rate and review each other's gamejam games. The highest rated games will win the adulation and admiration of your game making peers, and you and your team will be known as the Greatest Game Hackers in Perth! :)

Part-time employment opportunities @ apache energy limited

Apache Energy Limited is a major independent Oil and Gas company with assets in the North West Shelf area of WA and an Australian head office in Perth. We are currently seeking two experienced Records Management or Archive students, to join the Corporate Information Services Team for approximately 4 weeks fulltime work.

The main focus of these positions, will involve archiving current office records regarding well and seismic data, for offsite storage.

Applicants will be expected to have an understanding of:

  • Knowledge of the Information Life cycle;
  • Skills in the Archiving Process;
  • Microsoft Office applications;
  • Experience in using and managing Access databases;
  • Working as part of a team environment.

Hours are - 6 hours daily; Monday to Thursday. The positions are based at the Apache Energy head office in Perth. Rates will be negotiable on appointment and appointees will be duly registered with one of our preferred personnel contractors.

2009 Fullbright Scholarships

The Australia-American Fulbright Commission is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2009 Fulbright Scholarships.

The prestigious Fulbright program is the largest educational scholarship of its kind and was created by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright and the U.S. Government in 1946. Aimed at promoting mutual understanding through educational exchange, it currently operates between the U.S. and 150 other nations. In Australia, the scholarships are administered by the Australian-American Fulbright Commission headquartered in Canberra and are funded by the Australian and U.S. Governments and a select group of corporate partners.

There are several postgraduate scholarships on offer involving study or research programs in the United States. More information can be found at www.fulbright.com.au and applications close on the 31st of August 2008.

Call for volunteers - ECU Open Day

ECU is seeking student volunteers to help with this year's ECU Open Day on Sunday, 27 July at the Mount Lawley Campus. If you are friendly, enthusiastic and keen to get involved then you may be exactly what we are looking for!

By becoming a part of the ECU Open Day Team you will gain valuable experience in assisting prospective students, supporting your university and promoting your field of study!

A one hour training session is all it takes to become a team member and all volunteers will receive a free t-shirt, lunch, a letter of reference and a certificate signed by the Vice-Chancellor.

Are you interested in playing with the latest Java technology over the July holidays or even in Semester 2?

Dr Leisa Armstrong is looking for enthusiastic programming students to work with this new and exciting technology. If you can program in Java you can program sun spots.
