Majors / Minors

A Major is the specific area that you’re studying in your course.

For example if you intend to study the Bachelor of Science (Library Technology), your major will be Library Technology. Or if you intend to study the Bachelor of Information Technology, you will choose your primary major from Information Technology, Computer Security and Mobile Computing. In addition to your primary major, you – as a BIT student – will also have the option of choosing a second 8 unit major as your supporting studies.

A Minor is a program of study incorporating six units of study in a second area. Minors have specific structures that need to be followed in order to fulfil the requirements of a Minor in that area. Minors also subject to availability from the School that offers them.

An Elective can be any unit provided:

  • You have fulfilled the prerequisites of the unit, and
  • You don’t have more than 180 credit points at first year level in your degree, and
  • It’s at undergraduate level, and
  • Provided it’s not a restricted unit, and
  • Provided your course coordinator approves your enrolment in that unit.

SCIS Students have the option of combining their studies in SCIS with supporting studies from a wide range of other disciplines offered by ECU.

For information on 8 unit supporting majors, minors and electives offered by other ECU Schools, please refer to the ECU Handbook.
